History of WCGS

(1860—2010)

The property of Essington was purchased in August 1980. The vision to start our Christian School, Essington Christian Academy, was one of the main reasons we purchased the historic building. We believed it would provide a beautiful and relaxing atmosphere in which to learn, play and grow in the ways of the Lord.

Essington House was built in 1860. It is built of convict bricks some of which have the heart motif. It is set in 0.5 hectares of lawn and gardens. The house is located on the site of an old toll-bar and was built as the residence of the tollgate master. Toll-bars, barriers at which tolls were collected, came into operation in NSW in 1810 and continued in one location or another until 1896. It was when the new road to the Nepean River at Emu Plains was opened that the toll-bar on the Great Western Highway, where Essington House stands, was built.

Essington House was renovated in 1940 and used as a doctor's surgery. It was purchased by Foursquare Gospel Church, Parramatta in 1980, restored, and officially opened on 19th March 1983. At this time the School commenced with 9 students.

In 1992, further renovations commenced that included a first floor being added above the church, which allowed for additional classrooms to be housed. Further renovations were started in 2009 and are scheduled to be completed in 2010, which will see the addition of classrooms, a Library and Computer Room.

In 2010, Essington Christian Academy became Westmead Christian Grammar School. The mission of the school will continue into the future, however the school community believes that the new name will assist others in recognising the location of the school.
